Designed by architect Stephen Decatur Hatch, it was a four-story brownstone mansion located at the northeast corner of Fifth Avenue and 47th Street.
Following Opdyke's death in 1880, the mansion was purchased by Jay Gould, a prominent railroad tycoon, for $250,000. Gould refurbished the house with the help of the Herter Brothers and moved in with his family in 1882.
