Initially known as the Black, Starr & Frost Building, it housed the jewelry showroom of the Black, Starr & Frost company. Over the years, the building's exterior has undergone significant changes to reflect evolving architectural trends. In the mid-20th century, the facade was completely redesigned by Hausman & Rosenberg, transforming it from its original Beaux Arts appearance into a more austere, mid-century modernist style characterized by a stone exterior punctuated by tall, oval windows reminiscent of Edward Durrell Stone’s style.

Around 2018, a major transformation began to modernize the structure again. The building's deteriorated marble facade was replaced with a ventilated metal panel rain screen system coupled with an intricate lattice of aluminum fins and exterior lighting. This re-cladding aimed to refresh the building’s street presence, integrating a double-height steel storefront at ground level while retaining the building's status as a prominent commercial and retail location. The modernization project was designed by Yoshihara Mckee Architects and managed by Tishman, under the ownership of the Singaporean lender United Overseas Bank, which also serves as a primary tenant.
