Das Design, geleitet vom Architekten Hugh Stubbins, zeichnet sich durch ein markantes geneigtes Dach und vier riesige Stelzen aus, die die Struktur tragen. Ursprünglich war das Gebäude wegen eines Konstruktionsfehlers bei starkem Wind einsturzgefährdet, wurde aber kurz nach Fertigstellung verstärkt.

2001 erwarb Boston Properties das Gebäude, das daraufhin in 601 Lexington Avenue umbenannt wurde. Die New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission erklärte das Citigroup Center 2016 zum Stadtdenkmal.
