1 Rockefeller Plaza, part of the iconic Rockefeller Center in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, was completed in 1937. The building is known for its Art Deco style, consistent with the rest of the complex.
Initially, the site was used as a large parking lot. In 1936, Time Inc. expressed interest in relocating from the Chrysler Building to a new headquarters within Rockefeller Center. The company was offered seven floors and a penthouse in a proposed skyscraper on the southern block of the complex. Excavation began in June 1936, and the steelwork was completed by November of that year. The building, originally planned as 32 stories, was increased to 36 stories with setbacks to maximize rentable space.
The Time & Life Building, as it was known, officially opened on April 1, 1937. Time Inc. moved into the building in 1938. The lease stipulated that no construction could occur within 200 feet of the building's uppermost floors.
