It initially served as the home for the William Knabe & Co., a prominent piano manufacturer, which occupied the ground floor and basement as their piano warerooms. The upper floors housed various commercial offices, including notable tenants such as rare book dealer Francis P. Harper.

Originally, the building's design featured show windows, engaged columns, and cast iron balcony railings, which were later modified by architect Frank H. Hutton to modernize the ground floor for Ovington's, a luxury gift shop. Despite these changes, the building has preserved much of its original architectural integrity and was recently restored to maintain its historic charm.
