1 Wall Street, located in the Financial District of Lower Manhattan, New York City, is a prominent Art Deco skyscraper. Designed by Ralph Thomas Walker of the firm Voorhees, Gmelin and Walker, its original 50-story structure was built between 1929 and 1931. A 36-story annex was added from 1963 to 1965 by the successor firm Voorhees, Walker Smith Smith & Haines.
Originally constructed for Irving Trust, one of the larger banks in New York City during the early 20th century, the building occupied a highly valuable plot. It replaced several previous structures, including the Manhattan Life Insurance Building, which was once the world's tallest building. After Irving Trust was acquired by The Bank of New York Mellon (BNY Mellon) in 1988, 1 Wall Street served as BNY Mellon's global headquarters until 2015.
The building has undergone significant restorations, including major works in 1965 and 2021, to ensure its preservation and adaptation over time. It was officially listed on the New York Register of Historic Places on March 6, 2001.
1 Wall Street is also known as the Irving Trust Company Building, Bank of New York Building, or BNY Mellon Building. It stands as a significant architectural landmark in New York City, embodying the distinctive features of the Art Deco style.
1 Wall Street, located in the Financial District of Manhattan, New York City, is also known as the Irving Trust Company Building, the Bank of New York Building, and the BNY Mellon Building. This 654-foot-tall Art Deco skyscraper was designed by Ralph Thomas Walker of the firm Voorhees, Gmelin and Walker and constructed between 1929 and 1931 for Irving Trust. The building occupies a full city block, bounded by Broadway to the west, Wall Street to the north, New Street to the east, and Exchange Place to the south.
Originally, the building consisted of a 50-story structure with a 28-story annex added later, which was expanded to 36 stories. The facade features inwardly-curved bays with fluting resembling curtains, narrow windows, and elaborate entrances. The building includes numerous small setbacks and chamfers at the corners. The top of the original building features a freestanding tower with fluted windowless bays.
After being acquired by Harry Macklowe, the building underwent a significant renovation from 2018 to 2023, transforming it into a residential complex with some commercial space. The building now offers 566 condominium apartments, showcasing a blend of Art Deco heritage and modern luxury living.
1 Wall Street is a contributing property to the Wall Street Historic District and was designated as a city landmark in 2001 for its exterior, with the Red Room receiving landmark status in 2024.
