Geschichte von 110 East 42nd Street, Manhattan, NYC

110 East 42nd Street, auch bekannt als das Bowery Savings Bank Gebäude, ist ein 18-stöckiges Bürogebäude in Midtown Manhattan, direkt gegenüber vom Grand Central Terminal. Es wurde im italienischen romanischen Revival-Stil von der Architekturfirma York and Sawyer entworfen, mit William Louis Ayres als verantwortlichem Partner. Das Gebäude steht auf dem Gelände des ehemaligen Grand Union Hotels, das 1916 abgerissen wurde.

Der Bau von 110 East 42nd Street begann 1921 und wurde 1923 abgeschlossen. Ein Anbau, bekannt als „The Chapel“, wurde zwischen 1931 und 1933 hinzugefügt und ist im originalen romanischen Stil gestaltet. Die Fassade des Gebäudes sowie das Innere der Bankhalle wurden 1996 zu Wahrzeichen von New York City erklärt.

Das Gebäude wurde ursprünglich als neue Filiale der Bowery Savings Bank errichtet, die ihren Hauptsitz von der ursprünglichen Bowery-Location nach Uptown verlegte. Dieser Umzug spiegelte die Verlagerung des kommerziellen Zentrums von New York City nach Midtown Manhattan im frühen 20. Jahrhundert wider. Das Gebäude war Teil der „Terminal City“-Entwicklung über den unterirdischen Gleisen des Grand Central Terminals und nutzte die Luftrechte über der Eisenbahn.

Die Bankhalle im Erdgeschoss ist ein beeindruckender Raum von etwa 80 mal 197,5 Fuß mit einer Deckenhöhe von 65 Fuß. Das Design erinnert an eine Renaissance-Basilika und ist reich verziert mit Marmor, Kalkstein, Sandstein und Bronzeelementen. Architektonische Details umfassen einen großen romanischen Bogen am Eingang sowie mehrere vertikale Abschnitte, die durch Pfeiler an der Fassade getrennt sind. Der Anbau „Chapel“, der an die Bankhalle anschließt, zeigt eine an die Renaissance angelehnte Struktur mit Elementen des Art Deco.

1998 wurde das Gebäude an SL Green verkauft, und die Bankhalle wurde in einen gehobenen Veranstaltungsraum umgewandelt, der von Cipriani betrieben wird. Trotz der Änderungen in der Nutzung im Inneren dienen die oberen Stockwerke weiterhin als Büroräume. Das Gebäude bleibt ein bedeutendes architektonisches und historisches Wahrzeichen, das das wirtschaftliche Wachstum und die Ambitionen von New York City in den 1920er Jahren symbolisiert.
