Liberty Tower, located at 55 Liberty Street in Manhattan, New York City, is a historic 33-story Gothic Revival building designed by Henry Ives Cobb. It was constructed between 1909 and 1910 as a commercial office building and was known for being one of the world's tallest structures with such a small footprint at the time of its completion.
The building was originally known as the Sinclair Oil Building after being purchased by Sinclair Oil shortly after World War I. In 1979, architect Joseph Pell Lombardi led the conversion of the building into residential apartments, renaming it Liberty Tower. This conversion marked one of the first office-to-residential transformations in Manhattan's Financial District.
Liberty Tower was designated a New York City landmark in 1982 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. It is also part of the Wall Street Historic District. The building features a distinctive architectural style with white terracotta ornamentation, including birds, alligators, and gargoyles.
