The piers replaced older waterfront structures with grand buildings designed by the firm Warren and Wetmore, known for their work on Grand Central Terminal. After luxury liners were moved north to new terminals in the 1930s, the Chelsea Piers, including Pier 61, transitioned into cargo terminals and were heavily used during World War II for troop deployment. Pier 61 was also utilized by the United States Lines shipping company, underscoring its importance in commercial maritime operations in the mid-20th century.

Today, Pier 61 is part of a 28-acre sports and entertainment complex that includes Piers 59 and 60, integrated into Hudson River Park. The site has also served as a critical support location during emergencies, notably during the events of September 11, 2001, when it was used as a relief station with water and first aid for people fleeing Lower Manhattan.
