History of 1178 Broadway, Manhattan, NYC
1178 Broadway, located at the corner of 28th Street and Broadway in the NoMad neighborhood, is a building with a rich and varied history dating back to the 19th century.
In the mid-1800s, the site originally housed a brick-faced house that included a saloon operated by Thomas Thornton. This saloon became a notable target during the infamous New York City Draft Riots of 1863, a violent and chaotic episode marked by widespread destruction and unrest.
By the turn of the 20th century, the neighborhood had evolved, and Elias J. Herrick, a successful flour producer with deep family ties to early American settlers, purchased the property. In 1902, Herrick demolished the existing structures at 1178 Broadway and 17 West 28th Street to commission a new commercial building.
He hired the prominent architectural firm Clinton & Russell to design a five-story Beaux-Arts style building, known as The Hicks Building in honor of Herrick’s family connection to Margaret Hicks. This structure combined terra cotta, brick, limestone, and cast iron, featuring ornate elements such as banded limestone piers, ornate spandrels, engaged columns, festooned cartouches, and a decorative parapet along 28th Street.
The building originally accommodated various tenants, including the Corn Exchange Bank on the ground floor and storage firms like J. F. Reinhardt for seasonal apparel on the upper stories. Additionally, the Gaelic Society and the Municipal Council of the Irish National League rented space for their headquarters.
Over the years, the building housed a mix of commercial tenants including silk manufacturers and apparel firms, reflecting the changing economic character of the district. In 1917, the estate of Elias Herrick undertook modernization efforts to update the building's interiors.
Today, 1178 Broadway remains an important historic and architectural landmark in NoMad, boasting approximately 26,500 square feet over five stories. Its storied past and distinctive Beaux-Arts design offer a unique commercial space imbued with the character and legacy of early 20th-century Manhattan.
