The building at 841 Broadway, Manhattan, also known as the Roosevelt Building, was constructed between 1893 and 1894 for the Roosevelt family on land once owned by Cornelius Van Schaack Roosevelt. Architect Stephen D. Hatch designed this Romanesque Revival style structure, which features distinctive twisted columns and terra cotta ornamentation. The building was intended to be fireproof, with a steel frame and walls of brick, red granite, and terra cotta, and it was completed within a year of construction commencement.
Initially, 841 Broadway housed numerous men’s clothiers and apparel manufacturers, including Hackett-Carhart & Co., Crown Suspender Company, Nanotuck Silk Company, and Altman Neckwear Company. However, its historical significance largely stems from being the home of the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company, pioneers in early filmmaking technology. Founded by William Kennedy-Laurie Dickson, a former Edison associate, the company set up one of America’s first film studios on the building's seventh floor and utilized the rooftop for sunlight-lit filming. Their mutoscope technology allowed private viewing of short, sometimes risqué films through a hand-cranked viewer, marking an innovative phase in cinema history.
Despite a fire in 1903 and the decline of the neighborhood in the mid-20th century, including a period of decay in the 1970s, the Roosevelt Building survived the widespread demolition that transformed much of Union Square. It was extensively restored in 2007 by Israel Berger Architects, who replicated damaged terra cotta elements and recreated the lost copper cornice, treating the structure with landmark-level care despite it not being officially designated as such.
Today, 841 Broadway stands as a majestic example of late 19th-century commercial architecture, symbolizing both the Roosevelt family’s real estate legacy and the early American motion picture industry.
