4201 Broadway in Manhattan is the historic site of the Lexington School for the Deaf, a private, non-profit educational institution founded in 1864 by Hannah and Isaac Rosenfeld to provide education for their deaf daughter, Carrie. The school initially held classes for six deaf children in their Manhattan home at 367 Broadway, before incorporating in 1869 as the Institution for the Improved Instruction of Deaf Mutes. Over the years, the school occupied several rented houses in Manhattan until it raised funds for a new building on Lexington Avenue in 1882.
By 1914, the Lexington School for the Deaf had grown to serve 244 students with a waiting list, and in the 1930s it developed vocational programs such as sewing classes. The institution was renamed Lexington School for the Deaf in 1934. Due to increasing enrollment, the school purchased a six-acre site in Queens and relocated in 1968 to a large campus in East Elmhurst, featuring classroom buildings, a gymnasium, swimming pool, auditorium, residential facilities, and playing fields.
Today, Lexington remains the largest school for the deaf in New York State, serving approximately 275 students from the five boroughs and Long Island. The school provides a comprehensive educational program from infancy through high school, including specialized services such as foreign language transition programs and special needs classes. As a charter member of the state's 4201 Schools Association, Lexington receives financial support from the New York State Department of Education, enabling it to offer tuition-free education and maintain its long-standing commitment to serving deaf students with tailored educational approaches.
