I lavori di costruzione iniziarono nel 1930 e terminarono nel 1931 ad opera della Starrett Corporation e della Lehigh Valley Railroad come joint venture per creare un terminale merci e un magazzino. L'edificio fu progettato dallo studio di architettura Cory & Cory nello stile internazionale e presenta una facciata imponente con mattoni rossi e ampie finestre in vetro.

Originariamente utilizzato come terminale di distribuzione merci con lo slogan "ogni piano è un piano terra" grazie alla possibilità di accesso diretto ai veicoli, fu poi ripensato alla fine degli anni '90 come polo per industrie creative. Nel 1986 fu designato monumento storico di New York City.
