他们委托以铸铁建筑和哥特式项目著称的建筑师James H. Giles设计一座新的五层百货商店。该建筑于1870年完工,造价相当于今天近一千万美元,因其表面大胆使用铸铁而备受当时建筑评论家的称赞。这座维多利亚时代的商业大厦迅速成为繁忙的购物地,设有手动电梯和百老汇上的宏伟入口等特色。
大约在1914年,随着零售活动进一步向城北迁移,Lord & Taylor迁至第五大道和38街。这一转变带来了895-899百老汇建筑的重大建筑改造。建筑师John H. Duncan拆除了Giles原有的铸铁立面,改用庄重的石灰石新文艺复兴风格立面。重新设计采用了粗糙装饰的柱脚和均衡克制的装饰,明显区别于建筑早期华丽的维多利亚风格。
在整个20世纪,该建筑适应了Flatiron区不断变化的商业性质,先后成为多种零售、制造和办公租户的所在地。到1990年代,下层被改作健身设施,而办公空间仍保留在上层。尽管经历多次变更和翻新,该建筑仍保留了联系其19世纪起源的建筑元素,作为曼哈顿历史商业地块的价值得以保存。
