Located at 115 Fifth Avenue at 19th Street in Manhattan's Flatiron District, this historic building lies within the Ladies' Mile Historic District and occupies the entire block from 19th Street to Broadway. Originally constructed in 1868-1869 as the Arnold Constable Dry Goods Store, the building was designed by architect Griffith Thomas in the Second Empire Commercial style. It earned the nickname "The Palace of Trade" for its grand presence and role in New York City's retail scene.
The building's façades are distinct: the Broadway side features marble, while the Fifth Avenue front is made of cast iron. One of its most striking architectural elements is the two-story mansard roof added during an 1872 extension. Further expansions in 1873 and 1877 extended the building all the way through the block to Fifth Avenue, with ornamentation transitioning from marble to cast iron on the additions.
Arnold Constable & Company, founded in 1825, was one of America's oldest and most prestigious department stores, serving elite New Yorkers and earning a reputation as a purveyor of high-quality fashions. The store prospered and expanded for nearly 150 years, with this building serving as its flagship during much of the late 19th century. The store was a pioneer in the Ladies' Mile shopping district and was, at its peak, one of the largest business establishments in the world.
After Arnold Constable & Company's move uptown in 1914, the building was converted for wholesale use and later housed various retailers. Its architecture and historical significance have made it a notable landmark within the Ladies' Mile area, reflecting both the commercial growth and architectural style of its era.
