History of 320 5th Avenue, Manhattan, NYC
The building at 320 5th Avenue in Manhattan was originally part of a prestigious residential district in the 19th century. The site housed a brownstone mansion built by Thomas Rigney and later purchased by Isaac Underhill Coles in 1861. By 1877, Mrs. Mary Bell acquired the property for $80,000, a significant sum at the time, reflecting its location at the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and 32nd Street, near the Astor family mansions, the most exclusive area in Manhattan.
As the 20th century approached, the neighborhood underwent dramatic transformation. The Astor mansions were replaced by commercial buildings, including the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel. By 1903, Mary Bell had also purchased the adjoining Bierstadt house and private stables, consolidating a valuable plot worth approximately $1.25 million. Partnering with developer Henry Corn, she commissioned the construction of an eleven-story store, loft, and office building, which was completed in 1905.
The building initially housed Reed & Barton, a wholesale firm, and by 1921 hosted the Bank of United States headquarters until 1928, when it was downgraded to a branch. Known thereafter as the Bell Building, it continued to serve commercial tenants through much of the 20th century. Notably, Maximillian Toch developed a deodorizing process there in 1922 that was presented to a mayoral committee on waste management.
Through the decades, the building underwent some architectural alterations, including the removal of balconies and decorative cornices, reflecting the more modern tastes of the early 1900s. In the 1960s, Reed & Barton moved out, and the property changed ownership, becoming known as the Brause Building. The Bank of Tokyo Trust Company occupied parts of it until the late 1970s.
Today, while much of its Edwardian ornamentation has been stripped away, the 1905 structure remains a proud historical edifice in the Koreatown neighborhood of Midtown Manhattan. It serves commercial purposes, continuing the legacy of adaptation from a residential mansion to a bustling urban office and retail building over more than a century.
