Storia di 24 West 40th Street, Manhattan, NYC

L'edificio situato al 24 West 40th Street a Manhattan, New York City, fu costruito nel 1925 come sede della rivista Scientific American. Commissionato da Munn & Co., Inc., gli editori di Scientific American, questa struttura di 16 piani fu progettata dall'architetto Ely Jacques Kahn dello studio Buchman & Kahn. Sebbene Kahn fosse noto per lavori modernisti e Art Deco, per questo edificio adottò uno stile Rinascimentale francese, caratterizzato da materiali in mattone e terracotta e da un'enfasi sulla verticalità attraverso archi affiancati con sottili colonnine. Una copertura piramidale con abbaini francesi e pinnacoli appuntiti corona l'edificio.

Al momento della sua costruzione, l'isolato di 40th Street tra la Fifth e la Sixth Avenue stava passando da residenze in pietra brunita a moderni edifici per uffici. Il Scientific American Building si distingueva tra questi edifici eccezionali eretti nella prima metà del XX secolo.

L'edificio ospitava anche l'Association for the Establishment and Maintenance for the People in the City of New York of Museums of the Peaceful Arts, fondata nel 1914 per promuovere l'educazione nella scienza e nell'industria. L'associazione manteneva una grande biblioteca e esponeva innovazioni per supportare il progresso industriale.

Nel dicembre 1928, The Miller Company, un produttore di apparecchi di illuminazione, affittò due piani, riempiendo l'edificio fino alla piena occupazione. L'edificio resistette alle difficoltà della Grande Depressione e della Seconda Guerra Mondiale, cambiando proprietà nel 1943, ma rimase un punto di riferimento significativo associato all'educazione scientifica e industriale.
