La storia del 17-19 West 34th Street, Manhattan, NYC

Il sito del 17-19 West 34th Street era originariamente occupato da due imponenti ville in brownstone di proprietà di James W. Pryor e Henry P. Loomis. Situate a metà isolato tra la Fifth e la Sixth Avenue, queste ville subirono una crescente pressione dallo sviluppo commerciale espandendosi all'inizio del XX secolo.

Nel 1905, la villa al 17 West 34th Street fu sostituita da un edificio di 11 piani per negozi e loft progettato dall'architetto Francis A. Minuth, commissionato dal prestigioso pellicciaio Revillon Frères. La struttura rivestita in pietra calcarea presentava un’architettura ispirata al Rinascimento italiano arricchita da elementi decorativi Beaux Arts come spandrel scolpiti a motivi di foglie e fasce intagliate tra i piani. La sua base a due piani era accentuata da fasce in pietra calcarea poco profonde, conferendo una presenza raffinata e elegante sulla strada.

Poco dopo l’apertura, l’edificio fu ampliato verso ovest acquisendo la villa adiacente di Loomis, costruendo un’estensione che uniformò la facciata. Dettagli notevoli dell’edificio includono quattro volti scolpiti sotto una balaustra traforata sul lato di 35th Street e foglie di quercia e ghiande finemente intagliate negli spandrel dell’ingresso su 35th Street, insieme a lavorazioni in ferro ornamentale che evidenziavano l’aspetto originale dell’edificio.

La ricchezza della clientela di Revillon Frères si rifletteva nelle dotazioni di lusso dell’edificio, compreso un deposito frigorifero per pellicce e altri articoli di alta gamma. Tuttavia, l’azienda si spostò successivamente verso Uptown. Nel 1912 erano in corso trattative per subaffittare l’edificio e nel 1918 Revillon Frères si era trasferita a Fifth Avenue e 53rd Street.
