1905年开业至1923年间，建筑由戈勒姆制造公司使用。1923年10月，戈勒姆搬往更北位置，并出售了该建筑及土地租赁权。不久，这处地产被马蒂茨房地产公司购得，为女装百货公司鲁塞克斯所用。鲁塞克斯于1924年入驻前进行了大规模改造，包括加固混凝土楼板、新增橱窗，并将36街上的四层部分扩建至八层。

鲁塞克斯于1959年关闭第五大道店铺后，建筑于1960年售予斯皮尔证券公司。斯皮尔证券进行了大规模改造，修改了街道层立面并移除了一些原有建筑细节，如柱廊和雕刻的大理石构件，改以玻璃幕墙替代低层外观。
在整个历史中，390第五大道一直与商业紧密相关，尤其是服装贸易和特色商品。其设计及历史关联反映了当时第五大道确立为一流商业购物区的阶段。
1998年12月15日，该建筑被正式指定为纽约市地标，认可其建筑价值及其在商业历史中的地位，尽管底层已因改动与原设计有所不同。
